Picking through the hillbilly country star’s solo 45s from 1953 to 1962 (she did times with the Carlisle Brothers and fronted the Lump Boys, as well as doing her turn at the Opry), ‘The Wages Of Sin’ capture Betty’s rhetoric on lost love, desertion, divorce and all round good time depression. An aching slice of melancholy with a side of trauma too. Warning: Contains brooding fiddle and bereft steel.
