They were different times back in 62, when sleevenotes puffed up the personality like so: “Picking ever since he received his first guitar aged nine, and singing just as long, George has also become known as a songwriter of many, many hits in his chosen field but his greatest renown is as a singer, a singer who has just one purpose in mind, to do his very best either at a personal appearance or on whirling wax.” The new favorites album sees him co-writing tunes with Darrell Edwards as well as covering Don Carter’s ‘Poor Little Rich Boy’ and Dicky Lee Lipscomb’s ‘She Thinks I Still Care’. As ever with George, it’s bittersweet storytelling as personified by the epic Smokey Stover closing cut ‘Sometimes You Just Can’t Win’. A sentiment he carried on for many a moon.
