Lazy Bones 03:25

about

It’s talking country blues from the off on ‘Old Doc Brown’ from 1956, before Hank breaks free on ‘How To Play Guitar’, but it’s the mordant sentimentality of tracks ‘That Pioneer Mother Of Mine’ and ‘First Nighters’ that follow that really set the tone here. Sure, ‘Trouble Trouble Trouble’ tries to lift the mood but elsewhere the churchy organ and Hank’s confessionals make this a splendidly depressing affair. The closer ‘Lazy Bones’ has a surprising splash of Disney-like colour but for all its laidback glory, it’s those storytelling blues that really cut it here. And, ‘The Horse’s Prayer’, well, as the reverse of the sleeve of the album’s re-issue in the 70s, this was acclaimed as one of Hank’s best narrations, obviously taken from the horse’s point of view. Who are we to argue?
