George Jones' brooding late 50s opus ‘George Jones Salutes Hank Williams’ filled with glorious melancholy. "I couldn't think or eat nothin' unless it was Hank Williams, and I couldn't wait for his next record to come out. He had to be, really, the greatest," Jones revealed in a documentary in the late 80s, a man he admired so much that when they met and Jones tried to accompany him on guitar, he couldn’t play a note: “I loved his singing so much that I was dumbfounded. I never hit one note. My fingers just froze to the neck of the guitar." Re-issued in the 80s with sleevenotes by Elvis Costello (a fan of both George and Hank), it’s a classic set with great versions of the aching originals.
